The 2020 Belarusian presidential election was held on Sunday, 9 August 2020. On the election night, when unofficial results from polling stations started to indicate a landslide victory by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, contrary to the regime’s assurances that Lukashenko won the elections, the Belarusian people took to the streets to show their support for Tsikhanouskaya. The regime responded with violence, torture and severe repressions. The Belarusian and Russian-speaking social media, mainly Telegram channels, were flooded with pictures and videos of regime police severely beating and torturing peaceful protesters. Photos from hospitals and victims’ testimonies indicated mass torture and rape in detention. The @NowBelarus Twitter account was created shortly after the 9th August elections to report (in English) recent developments from the peaceful anti-regime protests in Belarus and to document and share the evidence of regime’s crimes in Belarus. Contrary to the regime’s expectations, peaceful protests continued. NowBelarus reports the latest news from Belarus in English.
