Doctors and Teachers in Ukraine Earn More Than in Belarus

$520 a month is the average salary in Belarus in 2020. Compared to 2019, it has increased in rubles, but decreased in dollars – by $29, Radio Svaboda reports.

Neighbors are catching up and overtaking Belarus for wages

Five years ago, Belarusian wages significantly outpaced wages in Ukraine and Moldova (long considered the poorest country in Europe). In 2016, the comparison was as follows:

  • Belarus – $420
  • Moldova – $245
  • Ukraine – $180

Traditionally, wages in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Russia were higher. Last year, Belarusian salaries were almost equal to Moldova and Ukraine:

  • Belarus – $520
  • Moldova – $465
  • Ukraine – $450

Teachers in Belarus are offered 3.5 times less than in Poland, and $16 less than in Ukraine.

On the website of the Ministry of Labor of Belarus we find the first three vacancies for a teacher. Teachers get payed 800 rubles a month or $307 at the current exchange rate.

Looking at vacancies in neighboring countries (the capital and vacancies for subject teachers with a higher education diploma).

  • Belarus – $307
  • Ukraine – $323
  • Latvia – $600
  • Lithuania – $960
  • Russia – $965
  • Poland – $1074

It turns out that Belarus is inferior to everyone.

With doctors it turns out a similar situation. In order to calculate the average salary of doctors, we looked at several position for specialist and also in the capital.

  • Belarus – $423
  • Ukraine – $539
  • Russia – $ 379
  • Latvia – $1800
  • Lithuania – $1800
  • Poland – $2400
