Medicines In Belarus Become More Expensive Due To VAT

The regime needs money to sustain

As previously reported by an office life source, retail prices for medicines are starting to rise in Belarus due to the introduction of VAT on these goods. For example, the state-owned company “Belpharmacia” informs that “due to changes in legislation” from February 1, prices may be changed. The price increase was not directly mentioned.

Columnist Leanid Frydkin notes that tax increases are not uncommon during crises:

– The state needs money, and VAT is rightfully considered the most collected tax, and the largest source of budget revenues.

At the same time, Deputy Finance Minister Yury Seliverstau previously promised to allocate additional funds from the budget to provide drugs to hospitals and beneficiaries. It was also stated that MART and the Ministry of Health will deal with “unreasonable” price increases.
