In Belarus, the participants of the rallies, who have already paid their fines with the help from third-party organizations and individuals, will have to pay their fines on their own, the Belarus 1 TV channel reports with reference to the Investigative Committee.
“The Investigative Committee reports that multiple facts of financing illegal mass events have been established. For instance, the payment of fines by third-party organizations and individuals for the participants of rallies. Thus, the people against whom the administrative penalty was imposed did not actually bear responsibility”
According to the Investigative Committee, a significant number of such cases have been determining. “With the consent of the prosecutor, these amounts were seized. Procedural actions have been initiated to recover funds directly from the offenders themselves,” said the report.
Recall that last November the bank accounts to which the affected Belarusians received financial assistance from the BY_help campaign were frozen. The Investigative Committee said that such measures were taken in regard to funds transferred “to finance protest actions.”
In January, journalist Andrei Aleksandrov and his girlfriend Irina Zlobina were detained. They are suspected of financing protest activities.
“Since August 2020, they have been financing people who took part in mass protests and other protest actions in Minsk. Including by paying their fines, and reimbursement for accommodation in isolation centres for offenders and temporary detention centres, and so on. They used foreign funds for this,” said Deputy Interior Minister Gennady Kazakevich. He also stated that the detainees spent some of the money on their personal needs: accommodation and groceries.
